The first, written by von Arnim's daughter under the pseudonym Leslie De Charms (1958) , was a collage of excerpts from diaries and letters with brief comments for context.
Elizabeth, Countess Russell, was a British novelist and, through marriage, a member of the German nobility, known as Mary Annette Gräfin von Arnim. Born Mary Annette Beauchamp in Sydney, Australia, she was raised in England and in 1891 married Count Henning August von Arnim, a Prussian aristocrat, and the great-great-great-grandson of King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia.

Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941) was the author of 21 books, including The Enchanted April, Elizabeth and her German Garden, Vera, The Pastor’s Wife, Expiation, Father, and Mr. Skeffington. The Elizabeth von Arnim Society is dedicated to fostering scholarly work on von Arnim and helping scholars from around the world to come together and exchange ideas.
