He was educated at Westminster School and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , London , and made his acting debut in 1921 at the Old Vic Theatre , London, later playing Romeo at the Regent Theatre, London, in 1924.

Whilst living at Barkston Gardens her career would really kick off, with her leading roles with distinction including most of the Shakespearean canon, mostly performed at the Lyceum.

If you're interested in the actress Ellen Terry and in seeing theatre memorabilia from the 19th and early 20th century, can I recommend a visit to her house in Smallhythe, Kent. (It's close to the beautiful village of Tenterden, which is also very worth seeing.)
