Elvera Sanchez was born in New York City to Cuban immigrants Luisa Valentina (née Aguiar) (13 February 1884–6 October 1995), who was a living supercentenarian at the time of Sammy Jr.'s death and Marco Sánchez (1852–1908), a cigar maker. She began her career as a chorus-line dancer at the Lafayette Theater in Harlem, in 1921.
