  1. Ernest William McFarland (October 9, 1894 – June 8, 1984) was an American politician, jurist and, with Warren Atherton, one of the "Fathers of the G.I. Bill ". He served in all three branches of government, two at the state level, one at the federal level.

  6. McFarland was Senate majority leader from 1951 to 1953. In 1952 he lost his bid for the Senate to Barry Goldwater. Returning to Arizona, McFarland served as governor from 1955 to 1959. In 1964 he was elected associate justice for the Arizona Supreme Court and rose to chief justice in 1968.
