Prussian. vereinsthaler. The Vereinsthaler was the currency of Prussia between 1857 and 1873. It replaced the Thaler at par and was replaced by the Mark at a rate of 1 Vereinsthaler = 3 Mark. The Vereinsthaler was subdivided into 30 Silbergroschen, each of 12 Pfennings.
German -taler means "of the valley" (cf. Neanderthaler ). By the late 16th century, the word was variously spelled as German taler, toler, thaler, thaller; Low German daler, dahler . In 18th to 19th-century German orthography, Thaler became standard, changed to Taler in the 1902 spelling reform .
Between 1807 and 1813, the Westphalian thaler (equal to the Hanoverian Thaler) and the Westphalian frank circulated in Hannover. In 1834, the Thaler was revised in silver content to equal to the Prussian thaler at 1/14 a Cologne Mark. The Thaler was replaced at par in 1857 by the Hanoverian vereinsthaler .
