Sophia Wilhelmina era la hija mayor de Juan Ernesto IV, duque de Sajonia-Coburgo-Saalfeld (1658-1729), de su segundo matrimonio con Charlotte Johanna de Waldeck-Wildungen (1644-1699), hija de Josias II, conde de Waldeck- Wildungen.
Biografía. Juan Ernesto fue el décimo hijo varón, aunque el séptimo en llegar a la edad adulta, de Ernesto I de Sajonia-Gotha y de Isabel Sofía de Sajonia-Altenburgo.

John Frederick von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was the only son of Frederick Anton, Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and his first wife, Princess Sophia Wilhelmina of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. John Frederick mastered the French language. Between 1738 and 1742, John Frederick made a Grand Tour.
