Ernst Ludwig I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (7 October 1672 – 24 November 1724) was a German nobleman. Biography. He was born in Gotha, the eldest son of Bernhard I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, and his first wife, Marie Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt.

Married (1): November 20, 1671 to Marie Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt. Children: – Ernst Ludwig I,Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (1672) – Bernhard (1673) – Johann Ernst (1674) – Marie Elisabeth (1676)
Bernhard chose the town of Meiningen as his residence and became the first duke of Saxe-Meiningen. From 1682 Duke Bernhard I had the Schloss Elisabethenburg built and in 1690 established a court orchestra (Hofkapelle), in which Johann Ludwig Bach later became the Kapellmeister (1711).

Description. Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Meiningen, daughter of Ernst Ludwig I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and Dorothea Maria of Saxe-Gotha, married in 1729 Frederick III of Saxe-Gotha. The portrait can be compared with contemporary engravings of the sitter which share a similar neckline and jewelled hairstyle (for example RCIN 609775, c. 1729-39).
