Ethel Barrymore was an immensely talented and gifted American actor and stage performer. Coming from the Barrymore family of actors, she was somewhat destined to become an actor. Like other members of the family, young Barrymore couldn’t resist the temptation of the stage and soon made her foray as a stage actress during the New York City season of 1894.

Ethel Barrymore was literally smothered in the up and down world of acting, and was exposed to very little else throughout her childhood and on into adulthood. She grew up in the Philadelphia of the 1880s and 1890s, in a house that contained all of her immediate family on her mother’s side as well as her father, an English immigrant who dismissed a career in civil service to become an actor.
