Initially with Karn as lead vocalist, their band christened themselves Japan in 1974. Joined by keyboardist Richard Barbieri and guitarist Rob Dean the following year, they signed a recording contract with German disco label Hansa in 1977, with whom they recorded three studio albums and became an alternative glam rock outfit in the mould of David Bowie, T.Rex, and The New York Dolls.
Everything and Nothing is a compilation album by David Sylvian. Released in October 2000, the album contains previously released and unreleased, re-recorded, and alternate versions of tracks from Sylvian's twenty years with Virgin Records. The record peaked at no.57 in the UK albums chart.

There is a wealth of unreleased and hard-to-find material on this 2-CD set, and it's NOT filler. As usual, the artwork is stunning, the guest list reads like a you-know-what, and the sound quality is superb. It has enough of his best-known tracks to function as a good introduction for the neophyte, too.

From Karn’s former bandmate David Sylvian’s official Facebook page: It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of mick karn after his battle with cancer. Several months after having been diagnosed with terminal cancer mick finally succumbed to the illness on 4th January 2011 in London.
