Wynton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 18, 1961, to jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis Jr. and Dolores Marsalis. He is the second of six sons, preceded by Branford Marsalis and followed by siblings Ellis III, Delfeayo, Mboya and Jason.
The best evidence, in fact, is provided by the Marsalis phenomenon itself. Wynton Marsalis is the first musician, black or white, playing non-fusion, uncompromising acoustic jazz, to become the object of a high-powered promotional campaign launched by a major record company.

Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter, composer, and music instructor, who is currently the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has been active in promoting classical and jazz music, often to young audiences.
