Zähringen is the northernmost suburb of Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its population is 9,196 (2020). [1] History. On September 30, 1008 Henry II issued a deed of donation with which he ceded his exclusive hunting rights (hunting privilege) in the Breisgau forests to the bishop of Basel. [2] .
The House of Zähringen (German: Zähringer) was a dynasty of Swabian nobility. The family's name derived from Zähringen Castle near Freiburg im Breisgau. The Zähringer in the 12th century used the title of Duke of Zähringen, in compensation for having conceded the title of Duke of Swabia to the Staufer in 1098.

The castle was definitely destroyed during the German Peasants' War in 1525. In 1815 the castle hill became the property of the house of Baden and today the area belongs to the municipality of Gundelfingen. What is still intact is a large round tower that was built in the 13th century.
