He became a king after receiving kingdoms from Charles V in 1555 including Spain & overseas empire; Franche-Comté; duchy Milan received earlier from Charles V in 1540; Naples & Sicily received on occasion of marriage to Mary I England. Habsburg dominions went to uncle Ferdinand I while imperial title went to him as well.
He is known for being a champion of Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation during his reign when Spanish Empire reached its peak power & influence despite failing to suppress revolt in Netherlands or invade England successfully with "Invincible Armada".
His only surviving son became Philips III.

As the only surviving legitimate son of Charles V, Philip ruled after his father's abdication from 1555 onwards. Philip II was a devout Catholic and vehemently advocated the Counter-Reformation.
