Philip II of France. Philip II (21 August 1165 – 14 July 1223), byname Philip Augustus ( French: Philippe Auguste ), was King of France from 1180 to 1223. His predecessors had been known as kings of the Franks ( Latin: rex Francorum ), but from 1190 onward, Philip became the first French monarch to style himself "King of France" ( rex Francie ).

Philip II [note 1] (21 May 1527 – 13 September 1598), also known as Philip the Prudent ( Spanish: Felipe el Prudente ), was King of Spain [note 2] from 1556, King of Portugal from 1580, and King of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death in 1598.
