The Hastings affair began when Lady Flora Hastings, a maid of honour who was allied and connected to the Tories, was forced by Victoria to undergo a medical examination for suspected pregnancy. Lady Flora Elizabeth Rawdon-Hastings was a lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Kent (mother of Queen Victoria) and a poet. Some of Rawdon-Hastings' work was published in nineteenth-century Australian newspapers, including the Temperance Advocate and Australasian Commercial and Agricultural Intelligencer.

HASTINGS, LADY FLORA, Was the eldest daughter of Francis, Marquis of Hastings, who made himself notorious as Lord Rawdon for the severity with which he treated the Americans who fell into his power during the revolutionary war. Lady Flora was born in 1806; and from her childhood manifested a fondness for study and literary pursuits.
