François Étienne Christophe Kellermann voit le jour le 28 mai 1735 à Strasbourg. Son père, d'origine noble, est licencié en droit et directeur de la gabelle de la ville. Lorsque la Révolution Française éclate, Kellermann est un militaire chevronné, soldat depuis l'âge de quinze ans, maréchal de camp (ce qui correspond de nos jours à général de brigade) depuis 1788.

Kellermann was the father of the cavalry general François Étienne Kellermann and grandfather of the politician François Christophe Edmond Kellermann.
