In the early 1930s, Joel McCrea (1905-1990) was a burgeoning actor in Hollywood, but his preeminent dream was to run a ranch. In 1933, McCrea married actress Frances Dee (1909-2004), and at the advice of his friend Will Rogers, he purchased a working ranch in the Santa Rosa Valley.
