Frances Macdonald McNair (1873–1921), watercolour painter and designer, was the younger sister of Margaret Macdonald. 1 Together with Mackintosh and James Herbert McNair they formed the informal creative alliance which became known as 'The Four', following an initial introduction by Francis H. ('Fra') Newbery when they were students at the Glasgow School of Art.
Margaret and Frances MacDonald, among history’s all-but-forgotten characters, were also among the artists to establish the aesthetic principles of Art Nouveau. Two women from Glasgow in Scotland were among the creators who dictated the aesthetic base of the artistic movement which illuminated Europe between 1890 and 1915.
Frances Macdonald McNair was a pivotal artist and designer in the development of the Glasgow Style and Art Nouveau aesthetic in Scotland. Of Frances's jewellery designs, only a small group of designs and photographs of executed items survive. Born near Wolverhampton, Frances Macdonald McNair moved with her family to Glasgow in 1890.
