Frances Macdonald McNair (1873–1921), watercolour painter and designer, was the younger sister of Margaret Macdonald. 1 Together with Mackintosh and James Herbert McNair they formed the informal creative alliance which became known as 'The Four', following an initial introduction by Francis H. ('Fra') Newbery when they were students at the Glasgow School of Art.
In the process they managed to establish an equality, if not superiority, of women and men. Margaret Macdonald was born in November of 1864 and Frances was born in August of 1873. Being raised in an upper-middle-class family enabled both sisters to attend art school and to initiate innovations in the art world.

Frances was however as talented as her older sister and they both enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art for the design course.
This volume discusses the lives and careers of Frances Macdonald and J Herbert McNair, two artists who are considered as adjuncts to Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald. Including over 200 images, it showcases Macdonald's and McNair's oeuvre, from watercolours and graphics to furniture and jewellery.
