He is considered to be among the last practitioners, along with his brothers, of the classic Venetian school of painting.
The Venetian views and imaginary lagoon subjects for which Francesco Guardi is justly famous have for long been well represented in The Metropolitan Museum. The artist also painted a few interiors, which are of a sort more commonly associated with his near-contemporary Pietro Longhi (1702–1785), by whom he was probably influenced
