Sayre was born in the White House in 1915, the first grandchild of President Woodrow Wilson. Sayre's father, Francis Bowes Sayre Sr., was a Harvard University law professor who later became an assistant secretary of state. His mother was President Wilson's daughter, Jessie Woodrow Wilson Sayre.
Francis Bowes Sayre, Sr. was born on April 30, 1885, in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert Heysham Sayre, a civil engineer and official of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Education Sayre, Sr. graduated from Williams College in 1909 and from the Harvard Law School in 1912.
John Nevin Sayre (February 4, 1884 – September 13, 1977) was an American Episcopal priest, peace activist, and author. He was an active member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) and helped found the Episcopal Pacifist Fellowship (now the Episcopal Peace Fellowship). The US State Department official Francis Bowes Sayre Sr. was his brother.
