Life and family. Eduard was born at Schloss Ballenstedt in Ballenstedt, in what is now the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, the youngest of the five children of the last reigning Duke of Anhalt, Joachim Ernst, and of his second wife Editha "Edda" Charlotte Wilhelmine Marwitz, who allegedly paid 10,000 marks to Bertha von Stephani to improve her social standing by adult adoption.

Julio Eduardo Ernesto Augusto Erdmann, príncipe de Anhalt (en alemán, Julius Eduard Ernst August von Anhalt; Ballenstedt, Alemania, 3 de diciembre de 1941), usualmente llamado príncipe Eduardo, es el jefe de la casa de Ascania, [1] la familia que gobernó el ducado de Anhalt hasta 1918.

Eduardo sucedió a su hermano, el duque Federico II de Anhalt, el 21 de abril de 1918, pero su breve reinado llegó a su fin cinco meses después con su propia muerte el 13 de septiembre de 1918. When Albert died in 1170, his son Bernard, who received the title of duke of Saxony in 1180, became count of Anhalt.
