A relatively modest gold coronet was made in 1728 for Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of George II. It takes the form laid down in a royal warrant issued by Charles II in 1677, [121] which states "the Son & Heir apparent of the Crown for the time being shall use & bear his coronett composed of crosses & flowers de Lizs with one Arch & in the midst a Ball & Cross". Henry Frederick, prins av Wales, född 19 februari 1594, död 6 november 1612, var en skotsk och engelsk prins, son till Jakob I av England och dennes hustru Anne av Danmark. Han uppkallades efter sin farfar Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley och morfar Fredrik II av Danmark .
Frederick Lewis, prince of Wales (1707–51). Eldest son of George II and Queen Caroline; father of George III. For most of his life Frederick was at odds with his parents, and by the mid-1730s he had become a willing tool of opposition politicians, hopeful of serving him when he became king. Brought up in Hanover, he came to England in 1728.
The obelisk in the centre of the square, of which Wood was "inordinately proud", was erected by Beau Nash in 1738 in honour of Frederick, Prince of Wales. It formerly rose from a circular pool to a point 70 feet (21 m) high, but a severe gale in 1815 truncated it.
