Ponsonby est nommé sous-lieutenant dans les Grenadier Guards le 11 février 1888 et promu lieutenant le 2 juillet 1892. Frederick Ponsonby, 1st Baron Sysonby, was his elder brother. The first Baron's grandson, the third Baron, was also a Labour politician and notably served as Opposition Chief Whip in the House of Lords in the 1980s.
