Shipowner and art collector. Frederick Richards Leyland (30 September 1831 – 4 January 1892) was one of the largest British shipowners, running 25 steamships in the transatlantic trade. He was also a major art collector, who commissioned works from several of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painters.

Frederick Richards Leyland was a British shipping magnate, patron of the arts, and early supporter of James McNeill Whistler. Whistler developed a close relationship with both Leyland and his family, a bond recorded in a series of intimate portraits that Whistler created of Leyland and his wife and daughters.

[1] The Peacock Room was once the dining room in the London home, 49 Prince's Gate, of Frederick Richard Leyland. When Frederick Richard Leyland died in 1892, 49 Prince's Gate - and its contents - was offered for sale. Leyland's porcelains and other treasures were sold.
