Known as the 'Father of modern theology' Friedrich Schleiermacher is without a doubt one of the most important theologians in the history of Christianity. Not only relevant to theology, he also made significant contributions in areas of philosophy such as hermeneutics, ethics, philosophy of religion and the study of Plato, and he was ahead of his time in espousing a kind of proto-feminism.
Friedrich Schleiermacher ( Breslau, 1768. november 21. – Berlin, 1834. február 12.) evangélikus lelkész, teológus és filozófus, a romantikus vallásfilozófia és teológiatörténet fejlődésének meghatározó alakja, a liberális teológia atyja. Emellett a hermeneutika megújítója, a modern hermeneutikai gondolkodás megalapozója.
Hermeneutik und Kritik, editados por Friedrich Lücke, que está basada en cartas autógrafas de Schleiermacher y en los apuntes que tomaron sus discípulos en las clases. Esta edición ha sido reeditada por Manfred Frank en Hermeneutik und Kritik, Frankfurt a. M., Suhrkamp, 1977. Otra de las ediciones es la de Virmond (1985).

Friedrich Schleiermacher was born in Breslau, Lower Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland). His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all pastors in the Reformed (Calvinist) tradition. A decade after Friedrich’s birth, his father, a chaplain in the Prussian army, experienced a pietistic awakening after coming into contact with a Moravian community, a German Protestant sect.
