Haatainen on koulutukseltaan valtiotieteen maisteri (VTM). Hänellä on myös sairaanhoitajan tutkinto. Hän on ollut kansanedustaja Helsingin vaalipiiristä vuosina 1996–2007 ja uudelleen vuodesta 2015.
