Henderson was the son of Captain Henderson of the 4th royals. He was born on 4 June 1783 at Newton, his father's property, on the banks of the Dee, Aberdeenshire. He passed through the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and obtaining a commission in the corps of Royal Engineers joined at Portsmouth as second lieutenant in March 1800.

Many Virginia Loyalists (almost all white) who went to various British territories petitioned the British government’s Loyalist Claims Commission for compensation for their lost property.
