Julian Hedworth George Byng, Viscount Byng of Vimy was a British field marshal and a commander in World War I. A career soldier from 1883, Byng was promoted to major general in 1909. As commander of the Canadian Corps in France (from May 1916), he was responsible for one of the most famous Canadian.

While a lieutenant, his success was assured when he won over officers of the fleet to Prince William of Orange’s cause in 1688, and helped establish his fortune. Byng led the attacking squadron at the capture of Gibraltar and played an important part at the battle of Malaga in 1704.
