Hace 5 días · In 1827 the prime minister Lord Liverpool became incapacitated and was replaced by George Canning. Peel resigned as home secretary. Canning favoured Catholic emancipation, while Peel had been one of its most outspoken opponents (earning the nickname "Orange Peel", with Orange the colour of the protestant Orange Order).

One of the two indisputably fascinating things Castlereagh ever did was to shoot Canning in the thigh in a duel brought about as much by the former’s oversized sense of honor as it was by the latter’s oversized sense of entitlement in scheming to oust his rival from the cabinet.

He succeeded Canning as prime minister but was unsuited to the position and was dismissed. In the ministry (1831–34) of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, he was again secretary for war and the colonies and lord privy seal.

During the 1812 general election, for instance, he is reported to have made 160 speeches in Liverpool. (7) Even so, by including a sampling of Canning's public orations, the editor acknowledged the fact that significant statements and the eloquence of leading statesmen were not confined to the Houses of Parliament.

Frere was educated at Eton, where he met the future statesman George Canning (with whom he collaborated on The Anti-Jacobin ), and at the University of Cambridge.
