George Cruikshank (1792-1878) Born into a family of well-known artists and illustrators, George Cruikshank was an established caricaturist when in 1835 publisher John Macrone suggested he provide illustrations for a collection of short works, or sketches, on London life by the young, little-known writer Charles Dickens.
