George Cruikshank (1792-1878) Born into a family of well-known artists and illustrators, George Cruikshank was an established caricaturist when in 1835 publisher John Macrone suggested he provide illustrations for a collection of short works, or sketches, on London life by the young, little-known writer Charles Dickens.

His subjects were the leading political and social figures of the day, and he became in this way a sort of graphic journalist - using caricature and satire to convey truth.
George Cruikshank influenced Edward Williams Clay, David Claypool Johnston, John Leech, Steve Bell, Anton Pieck, Ronald Searle, Arnold Roth, Oscar de Wit, Quentin Blake, Roger Law and Adam Dant. The caricatures by Rob Page in the title sequence of the ITV TV sitcom 'Rumpole of the Bailey' (1975-1992) were also inspired by Cruikshank's art.
