Pearson also restored the north transept facade in the 1880s. The abbey was heavily damaged in the bombings that ravaged London in World War II, but it was restored soon after the war.

Sir Henry Cole , chairman of the Society of Arts, subsequently arranged financing, partly through the offering of 999-year leases on choice seats, and new designs by Francis Fowke were approved in 1865.
