Ill-health compelled his final retirement in October 1864. He died at Castle Howard on 5 December 1864, aged 62, and was buried in the family mausoleum. He never married, and was succeeded by his brother, the Hon. and Rev. William George Howard, rector of Londesborough, Yorkshire.
