George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland KG, PC (9 January 1758 – 19 July 1833), known as Viscount Trentham from 1758 to 1786, as Earl Gower from 1786 to 1803 and as the Marquess of Stafford from 1803 to 1833, was an English politician, diplomat, landowner and patron of the arts from the Leveson-Gower family.
Elizabeth Sutherland Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland (née Sutherland; 24 May 1765 – 29 January 1839), also suo jure 19th Countess of Sutherland, was a Scottish noblewoman who married into the Leveson-Gower family, best remembered for her involvement in the Highland Clearances.

Granville George Leveson-Gower (2nd Earl Granville) was born in Westminster in 1815. He was the grandson of the Marquess of Stafford, which connected him to the Sutherlands, while his mother, Lady Harriet Cavendish, linked him to the Duke of Devonshire placing Granville at the heart of the aristocratic Whig cousinhood.
