George Grenville, afterward Nugent Temple Grenville (1753-1813), of Stowe, succeeded his uncle as Earl Temple in 1779 and was created 1st Marquess of Buckingham in 1784. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire from 1782 unrtil his death and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1782-83 and 1787-89.

Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford , he was appointed a teller of the exchequer in 1764, and ten years later was returned to parliament as one of the members for Buckinghamshire .
