George S. Patton, (born Nov. 11, 1885, San Gabriel, Calif., U.S.—died Dec. 21, 1945, Heidelberg, Ger.), U.S. army officer. He graduated from West Point and fought in World War I with the newly formed tank corps. He was later promoted to major general and given command of the 2nd Armored Division (1940).
