George Washington Vanderbilt was born on November 14, 1862, in New Dorp, Staten Island, New York, to the prominent businessman and philanthropist William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam. His father was also a well-known collector of paintings. George was the youngest of the couple’s eight children.
