Hij kwam uit een geslacht van Pruisische militairen dat terugging tot de 12e eeuw. Toen Gerd geboren werd, diende zijn vader als luitenant in een Pruisisch huzarenregiment. Zijn moeder was de dochter van een landeigenaar.
