It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Das Treffen fand nicht statt. Celan kehrte vorzeitig nach Paris zurück und schrieb die bedrückend schöne Erzählung «Gespräch im Gebirg», in der sich zwei Juden mitten im nächtlichen Gebirge begegnen. Mattias Caduff sucht mit seinem Film einen persönlichen Zugang zu diesem schwierigen Text, indem er sich selbst als Leser beobachtet.
This article focusses on Paul Celan’s Gespräch im Gebirg [Conversation in the Mountains] in the light of its Hebrew translation. Written in 1959, this short prose text is regarded as Celan’s response to Theodor W. Adorno’s statement that “writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric.”
