Brief Life History of William. When William Marshal 1st Earl of Pembroke was born about 1146, in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, his father, John FitzGilbert, was 43 and his mother, Sybilla de Salisbury, was 21. He married Isabel de Clare on 8 August 1189, in London, England. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters.
Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke (1194 - 27 June 1241) was the 3rd son of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1146-1219) and Isabella de Clare (1172-1240), the daughter of Richard de Clare. Gilbert acceded to the title of Earl of Pembroke on 11 June 1234 , on the death of his elder brother Richard who had died childless.
He was the son of John Fitz Gilbert (John the Marshal) by his second wife, Sybil, sister of Patrick de Salisbury, 1st earl of Wiltshire. In 1189 king Richard gave him in marriage, Isabel, countess of Striguil and Pembroke, daughter of Richard de Clare (see Clare family ), who brought him position and lands in England, Ireland, and Normandy as well as in Pembroke and Gwent.
Gilbert had a wife named Margaret Lanvallei. Gilbert's father was William Marshal 1st Earl Of Pembroke and his mother was Isabel De Clare . His paternal grandparents were John Marshal and Sibyl Devereaux ; his maternal grandparents were Richard Strongbow De Clare 2nd Earl Of Pembroke and Eva Of Leinster .

Als Zeichen der Versöhnung erbte Gilbert auch den Titel Earl of Pembroke und das Amt des Marshal of England. Am 11. Juni 1234 wurde er zum Ritter ( Knight of the Bath) geschlagen. [2] Obwohl ihm Heinrich III. noch weitere Gunstbeweise bewies, besaß er nie das volle Vertrauen des Königs. Letztlich war er nie ein so treuer Vasall wie sein Vater.
