Hace 4 días · Gilbert Murray was a British classical scholar whose translations of the masters of ancient Greek drama—Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes—brought their works to renewed popularity on the contemporary stage. Murray became professor of Greek at Glasgow University at age 23 and in 1908.

Gilbert Murray was a classical scholar, peace activist, and prominent humanist, who served as president of the Ethical Union (now Humanists UK) 1929-30. He was also present at the inaugural World Humanist Congress in 1952, from which was formed Humanists International.
On a celebrated evening in 1901 at Newnham College, Cambridge, Gilbert Murray read excerpts from Euripides' Hippolytus, the first of his translations of Greek tragedy, in his famously beautiful speaking voice (on which see D. Wilson 1987, 105). The effect on his audience was electrifying.

Unlike many who became involved in international affairs as a consequence of the 1914 War, he had been politically conscious and active for some time. He was a member of the Liberal Party, an advocate of Irish home rule, and a suffragist.
