Rhett Butler, in Gone With The Wind, may have been based on him. He wasn't highly regarded by those with 'old money' in New York, so scandal broke out when in 1896 Grace became engaged to Cornelius Vanderbilt, the great-grandson of the Commodore.

She was the queen of America's high society whose first major social success came in 1902, when Prince Henry of the House of Hohenzollern, the German Kaiser's brother, chose her to be his sole hostess on his visit to America.

After World War I, they travelled extensively around Europe, befriending royalty, including most significantly Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.

George Vanderbilt died without a son, so the Vanderbilt mansion at 640 Fifth Avenue, along with $1 million, passed to the eldest son of the eldest son of William Henry Vanderbilt, Cornelius Vanderbilt III and his wife, Grace Wilson.
