This area does not include some outliers within Greater London, but does extend into the adjacent South East England and East of England regions. クロスレールは新しいロンドン中心部の東西のトンネルを基礎として、グレート・ウェスタン本線のパディントン駅付近とグレート・イースタン本線のストラトフォード駅付近を結ぶ。東側はホワイトチャペルからドックランズを通る路線と使われなくなったノース・ロンドン線（英語版）の一部であるカスタム・ハウス駅やテムズ川の下を通りアビーウッド駅（英語版）へ至る支線が分岐する。列車は西側のメイデンヘッドやヒースロー空港から東側のシェンフィールド駅（英語版）やアビーウッド駅に向かって走る。シェンフィールドやヒースロー、メイデンヘッドの路線での既存の緩行線の運行はクロスレールが引き継いだ。新規に建設される区間は全長約22kmである。
