The renowned carver and sculptor Grinling Gibbons worked extensively for successive English monarchs, in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, being appointed Master Carver to William III in 1693. He was born in Rotterdam in 1648, the son of English parents, and received his early training in the Netherlands.
