He died in 1684 and was succeeded by his eldest son, William. Like his parents, William Cavendish the 3rd Earl of Devonshire, was a staunch Royalist and loyal to Charles I. William departed for the continent on the outbreak of the Civil War and returned to reclaim and restore Chatsworth around 1645.
