James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, 1st Duke of Buccleuch, KG, PC (9 April 1649 – 15 July 1685) was a Dutch-born English nobleman and military officer. Originally called James Crofts or James Fitzroy , he was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands , the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II of England with his mistress Lucy Walter .

29 de may. de 2018 · World Encyclopedia. *Monmouth, James Scott, 1st duke of* (1649–85). Charles II's eldest and most favoured illegitimate son, Monmouth gained experience with the French army in 1672–4. Becoming an English general in 1678, he defeated the Scottish rebels in 1679.
The conversion of James, duke of York, to catholicism brought Monmouth into play as a possible protestant successor to Charles II. In 1679 he was given command of the forces sent to suppress the covenanters in Scotland, which he did at Bothwell Bridge, but he lost favour with Charles.
