Göttingen (/ ˈ ɡ ɜː t ɪ ŋ ə n /, US also / ˈ ɡ ɛ t-/, German: [ˈɡœtɪŋən] ⓘ; Low German: Chöttingen) is a university city in Lower Saxony, central Germany, the capital of the eponymous district. The River Leine runs through it. At the end of 2019, the population was 118,911.

Lage. Göttingen liegt am Leinegraben an der Grenze der Leine-Ilme-Senke zum Göttinger Wald und wird in Süd-Nord-Richtung von der Leine durchflossen, der nördliche Stadtteil Weende von der Weende, mehrere nordöstliche Stadtgebiete von der Lutter und mehrere westliche Stadtbereiche von der Grone.
