Caillebotte also contributed to art history as a prominent collector of paintings by key artists of the impressionist and post-impressionist eras.

Infatti, è destinato a intraprendere la carriera di avvocato in quanto figlio di una rispettabile famiglia. Nel 1857 si iscrive così al liceo Louis-le-Grand di Vanves e el 1869 consegue la laurea in legge (diplôme de bachelier en droit).
