Die Stadt liegt im so genannten Chemiedreieck zwischen Schkopau und Bitterfeld-Wolfen . Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung datiert auf das Jahr 806. [7] .

It is situated on a sandy plain on the right bank of the Saale River, which there divides into several arms, 21 miles (34 km) north of Leipzig. The first evidence of occupation of Halle comes from artifacts of the Upper Paleolithic.

Bekannt ist sie als Geburts- und Sterbeort Martin Luthers. Zu Ehren des größten Sohnes der Stadt führt Eisleben seit 1946 den Beinamen „Lutherstadt“.
