From their position, he constructed a model of our galaxy which correctly showed that the Earth is far away from the centre of the galaxy lying outside the central bulge.

Shapley argued for a small universe the size of the Milky Way galaxy, and Curtis argued that the universe was much larger. The issue was resolved in the coming decade with Hubble's improved observations.

He examined the clusters' RR Lyrae variables (stars which he assumed were Cepheid variables ) and used their luminosity and period of variability to estimate the distances to the clusters.
