Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, army officer, governor general (b at London, Eng 10 Dec 1891; d at Slough, Eng 16 June 1969). The last British governor general of Canada (1946-52) was born into the Irish aristocracy.
Alexander was promoted to the post of Field Marshall in 1944 and two years later was made a Viscount. From 1946 to 1952 he served as Canada’s Governor-General. He was made Earl Alexander of Tunis in 1952 and from then until 1954 he served as Minister of Defence in the Conservative cabinet under Churchill. Harold Alexander died in 1969.
